More Than Teen Residential Treatment: Building a Brighter Future at Tamarack Center

Teen residential treatment isn’t just a place to treat the symptoms of adolescent mental health issues. Rather, the residential treatment program at Tamarack Center focuses on holistic recovery, helping teens to achieve their full potential, and providing our clients with everything they need to thrive.

By focusing on the whole person, rather than on specific symptoms in isolation, our treatment programs can help pave the way to sustainable healing and lasting improvements in several aspects of daily life. Treatment shouldn’t just be about solving a problem – but providing a pathway to a better, happier, more fulfilling life for years to come.

The Holistic Nature of Recovery

When you’re looking for treatment for yourself or a loved one, the term “recovery” gets tossed around quite a bit. People often assume that achieving recovery is an endpoint, or that it means that you no longer experience mental health symptoms or challenges.

But the truth is that recovery is a whole-person process that’s unique to each individual. While there are several different working definitions of recovery, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) defines it as:

“A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.”

When we say that Tamarack Center helps our clients achieve recovery, this is the goal that we’re working towards. Helping teens break free from the symptoms of severe mental health disorders is only the first step. Setting them on a healthy and positive path for the future is the ultimate goal.

How Tamarack Center’s Residential Treatment Programs Foster Recovery

To help our clients achieve this more holistic goal of whole-person recovery, we’ve carefully cultivated our residential treatment center to support teens in building the life skills needed to grow and thrive for years to come. This goes beyond evidence-based therapies, and into the values and culture that are built into the program itself.

We believe that a residential treatment facility can do much more than simply target symptoms. We believe that our teen residential treatment program can create a foundation for a long and healthy life in recovery.

Building Hope

The first step of the process is providing our clients with hope for their recovery. Teens dealing with mental health challenges can often feel worn down, exhausted, and doubtful that their mental health can improve. Treatment starts by showing teens that a brighter future is possible and that they can achieve great things if they put in the effort during treatment.

While we emphasize this hope throughout the program, some of the key ways that teens can start to build hope include:

  • Group Therapy: Peer-to-peer support in group therapy is the fastest way of showing adolescents that recovery is possible. Surrounding teens with people who have had similar challenges, know how they feel, and have made it through to the other side can be an inspiring source of motivation for their own recovery.
  • Individual Therapy: Working one-on-one with a master’s level therapist can provide teens with targeted actionable strategies to work through mental health symptoms and provide invaluable support for learning how to live a new life in recovery.
  • Educational Enrichment: Teens entering residential treatment centers have often faced challenges and setbacks in school. Our fully accredited school program provides targeted academic support to help teens catch up, keep up, and get ahead in their academic careers.
  • Showing the Rewards of Recovery: Residential programs don’t just provide a pathway to recovery but show teens what is possible when they work to overcome their challenges and start building healthier lives. It’s not enough to simply tell teens what’s possible – you need to show it to them.

When a teen has hope for their recovery, they can find the strength and resolve to put in the work required to break free from their mental health challenges. Our mental health professionals can help shine that light.

Cultivating Strengths

Tamarack Center takes a strengths-based approach to helping teens with their behavioral health challenges. This means focusing on each individual’s positive attributes, their current set of skills and knowledge, and recognizing their accomplishments despite the mental health conditions they’ve lived with.

By emphasizing the positive in each client, rather than focusing solely on weaknesses or behavioral challenges, teens can use their inherent capabilities and strengths to help galvanize the recovery process. This emphasis on individual strengths takes place across several aspects of the residential program, including:

  • Talk therapy sessions
  • Recreational therapy
  • School and education
  • Peer support groups
  • Family therapy

This approach to treatment meets clients where they’re at, builds upon the inherent positives in each teen, and makes the path toward recovery more approachable and achievable for every adolescent who walks through our doors.

Life Skills Development

Cultivating recovery for teens means preparing them to live self-directed lives as adults. Part of that process is ensuring that they have the life skills necessary to thrive in their adulthood.

Life skills training is integrated throughout the entire residential treatment program at Tamarack Center. From daily chores and personal accountability to teaching teens basic skills such as cooking, financial planning, and strong interpersonal communication skills, our team is constantly helping teens look forward toward success and preparing them to tackle life’s challenges with ease.

Fostering Community

Tamarack Center is a tight-knit community for teens to come together on the path to recovery. With just 16 beds and a high staff-to-client ratio, our teen residential program is uniquely suited to helping teens build strong and healthy relationships while receiving mental health treatment.

Social support is one of the most critical components of successful mental health treatment for teens. Having peers who understand your challenges and are willing to work together to achieve recovery can be an incredibly powerful force for change. By focusing on helping just a few teens at a time, we create a supportive environment to facilitate these deeper, more meaningful connections for each and every one of our clients.

Community isn’t just about peer support, either. At Tamarack Center, the entire family is involved in the treatment process to ensure that teens receive support not just from treatment, but from home as well. Family therapy sessions happen each week to get the family involved in the treatment process, to help facilitate healthier family relationships, and to pave the way for a better life together after treatment completion.

Providing Purpose

When helping our clients look toward the future, we place meaning and purpose at the top of the conversation. Teens struggling with mental health challenges need and crave a sense of meaning, something to work toward, and personal goals to achieve.

Finding this sense of purpose is a unique and deeply personal process for each teen. The pathway to providing this purpose is constantly evolving over the course of residential treatment, shifting with each step of progress made and adapting to changing circumstances and motivations.

But by helping our clients cultivate this sense of purpose, we prepare them to constantly work toward the path of recovery for the rest of their lives. Overcoming mental health challenges is never easy, but there is a brighter future in store for the teens who get the quality, evidence-based support they need and find this sense of purpose in the process.
